Lower than Speed to stretch the gaps between letters and words while each letter keeps its full speed.

600 Hz

Tap your own code

A short press is a dot and a long press is a dash. Pause for a new letter and pause longer for a new word. Lower the speed while you learn.

Translation, sound and the WAV file are made in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use the Morse code translator

Type or paste

Letters become Morse code, and dots and dashes become letters. The badge at the top shows which way it is translating. If a short entry is read the wrong way, choose the direction from the menu.

Write Morse with a space between letters and a slash between words, such as .... .. / - .... . .-. .. Underscores, middle dots and long dashes are read as well.

Listen and watch

Play sends the code as a tone while the lamp lights for every dot and dash, and the character being sent is highlighted. Tick Flash the whole screen to signal across a room.

Download WAV saves the same sound as an audio file at your current speed and tone.

Tap it yourself

Hold the key under Tap your own code with a finger, the mouse or the Space key. The translator decides between dot and dash from how long you hold, using the speed setting, and adds letter and word gaps from your pauses.

Morse code timing

The unit

Everything is measured in one unit, the length of a dot. A dash is 3 units. The gap inside a letter is 1 unit, the gap between letters is 3, and the gap between words is 7.

Words per minute

Speed is counted with the word PARIS, which takes exactly 50 units including the gap after it. At 20 WPM PARIS fits 20 times into a minute, so one unit lasts 60 milliseconds.

Farnsworth spacing

Farnsworth timing keeps each letter at full speed but makes the gaps longer, so the overall speed is slower. You learn the sound of a whole letter instead of counting dots, then shrink the gaps as you improve.

Morse code translator FAQ

How do you write SOS in Morse code?

Three dots, three dashes, three dots. As a distress signal it is sent as one run with no letter gaps, often written ...---..., rather than as the three letters S, O and S.

Why can't I hear anything?

Check that Sound is ticked and your volume is up. On iPhone the Ring/Silent switch mutes web pages, so switch it to Ring. The lamp keeps flashing even when sound is off.

What do the slashes and spaces mean?

A space separates letters and a slash separates words. Without them, codes run together and cannot be read reliably: ..- could be U, or E followed by A. Two or more spaces and a vertical bar are also read as word breaks.

Which characters can be translated?

Letters A to Z, numbers 0 to 9 and the punctuation in the chart. Accented letters are sent as the plain letter, so é becomes E. Other characters, such as emoji, are left out and listed under the result. A Morse code that matches no character shows as #.

What speed should I practise at?

A common approach is to learn each letter at 15 to 20 WPM and add extra spacing with the Farnsworth setting, rather than learning slow letters you later have to relearn. Set Speed to 20 and Spacing speed to around 10, then raise the spacing speed over time.
