Connect a controller by cable or Bluetooth, then press any button. Every input shows up live.

Press any button on your controller

Browsers only reveal a controller after a button press, even when it is already plugged in.

PlayStation 5 / 4

Plug in a USB cable that carries data, or pair it: hold Create (Share on PS4) and the PS button until the light flashes, then choose it in your Bluetooth settings.

Xbox

Plug in a USB cable, or pair it: turn it on, hold the Pair button on top for 3 seconds until the Xbox button flashes fast, then choose it in Bluetooth settings.

Switch Pro / Joy-Con

Hold the small sync button (on top of the Pro Controller, on the rail of a Joy-Con) until the lights run, then choose it in Bluetooth settings.

Stick drift

Let go of both sticks, then press the button. It watches them for 3 seconds.

How to use the controller tester

Connect and press

Plug the controller in or pair it over Bluetooth, keep this tab in front and press any button. Up to four controllers can be connected; pick one with P1 to P4.

Press every button

Each button lights up in the picture and in the list. Triggers and some buttons are pressure-sensitive, so they show a value from 0 to 1 rather than just on or off. Buttons outside the picture, such as a touchpad click, appear in the list.

Move the sticks

The dot follows each stick, and the X and Y values run from −1 to 1. Rolling a stick around its edge draws its outer shape, which is how the circularity error is measured.

Stick drift test

What drift looks like

Drift is when a stick reports movement while you are not touching it, so a character walks or the camera turns on its own. In this tester the dot sits away from the centre at rest and the X or Y value stays above zero.

Reading the result

Check drift records the largest distance from centre over 3 seconds with the sticks released. As our own rough guide, under 0.05 is normal, 0.05 to 0.15 is slight drift a deadzone can hide, and above that games are likely to notice it.

Suggested deadzone

The suggestion is the drift value as a percentage, rounded up, plus 2 points of margin. Set it in the game's controller settings, often called deadzone or inner deadzone. A larger deadzone hides drift but makes small aiming movements less precise.

Reducing drift

Test again after rolling the stick firmly around its edge several times, which can shift dust. Update the controller through the console or the Xbox Accessories app. If drift keeps growing, the stick sensor is wearing out and the controller needs repair or warranty service.

Controller not detected?

  1. Press a button after the page loads. Moving a stick may not be enough on some browsers.
  2. Try another cable. Many USB cables only charge. If the controller lights up but nothing appears here, the cable probably carries no data.
  3. Turn the console off. A controller paired with a nearby PlayStation, Xbox or Switch may reconnect to it instead of your computer or phone.
  4. Close Steam and similar apps. They can take over the controller and pass it on as a generic Xbox controller, which changes the button names and can block vibration.
  5. Check the browser. Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all read controllers, but only for the tab you are looking at. Restart the browser if the controller was connected while it was open and still does not appear.

Controller tester FAQ

Can I test a controller on my phone?

Yes. Pair the controller in your phone's Bluetooth settings, open this page and press a button. Android phones can also use a USB-C cable. The vibration buttons appear only if the phone's browser supports controller vibration.

Why are the vibration buttons missing?

They appear only when the browser reports that it can make this controller vibrate. Chrome and Edge do for many PlayStation and Xbox controllers; where support is missing, the buttons stay hidden instead of doing nothing. The Triggers button appears only for controllers with trigger motors, such as Xbox controllers in browsers that support them.

Why do the Switch triggers only show 0 or 1?

ZL and ZR on the Switch Pro Controller and Joy-Con are ordinary buttons, not analog triggers. PlayStation and Xbox triggers measure how far they are pressed, so they move smoothly from 0 to 1.

What is a good circularity error?

Lower is rounder. Many sticks read slightly beyond 1 at the diagonals because of the shape of the stick housing, which raises the figure. Compare both sticks on the same controller: a much higher number on one side points to wear or damage.

Why are my button names wrong?

The names follow the controller the browser reports. Third-party controllers and apps such as Steam often report themselves as Xbox controllers. Choose the right family under Button names.
