How the test works

45 statements

Each of the nine types has five statements, mixed together so the pattern is not obvious. They were written for this site and describe habits and motivations rather than skills.

Scores out of 100

Strongly disagree counts 0 and strongly agree counts 4, so each type scores 0 to 20, shown as a percentage. Your main type is the highest score.

Your wing

Your wing is whichever neighbouring type on the circle scores higher, so Type 4 has wing 3 or 5 and Type 9 has wing 8 or 1. A result written 4w5 means Type 4 with a 5 wing.

The nine Enneagram types

Type 1 · The Reformer

Principled and conscientious, with a strong inner sense of right and wrong. Ones want to improve things and do them properly. At their best they are fair and wise; under stress they become critical of themselves and others.

Type 2 · The Helper

Warm and attentive, quick to notice what others need. Twos want to be loved and needed. At their best they are generous without expecting anything back; under stress they can give in order to be appreciated and overlook their own needs.

Type 3 · The Achiever

Driven, adaptable and focused on goals. Threes want to be valued for what they accomplish. At their best they are effective and inspiring; under stress they work too much and worry about image more than substance.

Type 4 · The Individualist

Sensitive, expressive and searching for identity and meaning. Fours want to be true to themselves. At their best they are creative and emotionally honest; under stress they withdraw and dwell on what seems to be missing.

Type 5 · The Investigator

Curious, observant and independent. Fives want to understand the world and feel capable. At their best they are insightful and original; under stress they hold back time and energy and retreat into their thoughts.

Type 6 · The Loyalist

Committed, responsible and alert to risk. Sixes want security and people they can rely on. At their best they are dependable and brave; under stress they become anxious, suspicious or defiant.

Type 7 · The Enthusiast

Lively, optimistic and full of plans. Sevens want freedom and new experiences. At their best they are joyful and versatile; under stress they scatter their energy and avoid anything painful or dull.

Type 8 · The Challenger

Strong, direct and protective. Eights want to stay in control of their own lives. At their best they are generous leaders who stand up for others; under stress they become forceful and refuse to show vulnerability.

Type 9 · The Peacemaker

Easy-going, accepting and steady. Nines want inner and outer peace. At their best they bring people together; under stress they go along with others, avoid conflict and put off what matters to them.

What this result can and cannot tell you

A starting point

The Enneagram is a framework for reflecting on motivation, not a scientific measurement. Research on it is limited, and a short self-report test is easily swayed by mood and by how you see yourself.

Read the top three

If two or three scores are close, read each description and ask which one explains why you act, not just how. Many people only settle on a type after reading and talking it over.

Not for decisions about others

Do not use it to hire, diagnose or judge people. It is not a clinical assessment, and anyone who is struggling should talk to a qualified professional.

Enneagram test FAQ

Is the whole result really free?

Yes. Every score, your type, your wing and the descriptions are shown as soon as you finish. There is no email form, no account and no paid upgrade.

Is this the official Enneagram test?

No. There is no single official Enneagram test, and this site is not connected to any Enneagram organisation. The statements were written for this site rather than copied from published tests.

Why did two types get the same score?

Some people relate to two types almost equally, and with five statements per type, ties happen. The result names both. Read the two descriptions, or take the test again in a few days and compare.

Can my Enneagram type change?

Enneagram teachers generally say your core type stays the same while how you express it shifts with stress, growth and circumstances. Your scores on a test can change much more than that, which is one reason to treat the result as a starting point.

What does the result link share?

The link holds your answers in coded form, so whoever opens it sees the same scores. Nothing is stored on a server. Anyone with the link can see the result, so share it only with people you choose.
