Barcode Generator Code 128, UPC, EAN, Code 39 and ITF-14

Create a barcode from your value, check its digits and download a PNG or SVG.

How the check digit is calculated

Barcodes are generated in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

How to make a barcode

Choose a format and value

Select the barcode type used by your scanner or receiving system, then enter the value. The rules below the input explain the permitted characters and length. Code 128 automatically chooses the shortest sequence of sets A, B and C, including switches for mixed text and digit runs.

Code 39 accepts uppercase letters, digits and a limited set of punctuation. Its Mod 43 check character is optional. Retail formats use fixed digit counts and an obligatory check digit. If you omit that digit, the generator calculates it; if you include a wrong one, it reports the expected digit.

Save and test your label

Set the module width, bar height, quiet zone and text size. Download PNG at one to four times the selected size, or SVG for a vector file. For multiple labels, enter one value per line in the batch box. Each result has separate downloads, and Print barcodes prints only the generated labels.

Print at a size your scanner can resolve, without distorting the aspect ratio. Test the actual printed label in its intended setting. A successful on-screen scan cannot guarantee that every printer, label stock or scanner will work.

Why is my barcode not scanning?

Use dark bars on a light background with strong contrast. Inverted colors may not be recognized. Leave a clear quiet zone on both sides; this tool warns when it is less than ten modules. Requirements vary by symbology and use, so check the receiving system’s specifications. Bars that are too thin to print, a damaged print or an incorrect check digit can also prevent a scan.

The downloaded image uses whole-pixel bar positions. Resizing a PNG in another application can blur those edges. Prefer SVG when a layout application supports it, or generate a larger PNG and preserve its proportions.

UPC vs. EAN

UPC-A has twelve digits; EAN-13 has thirteen. An EAN-13 value beginning with zero represents the same number as the corresponding UPC-A value, so some readers report UPC-A as EAN-13. EAN-8 is a separate eight-digit format. UPC-E compresses particular UPC-A values into a shorter symbol, and the generator shows its expansion.

For UPC-E, six digits imply number system zero. Seven digits mean a number system digit followed by six payload digits; eight include the check digit too. This explicit convention avoids treating a seventh digit ambiguously.

What is a check digit?

A check digit is calculated from the other digits to help detect common entry errors. For UPC, EAN and ITF-14, multiply digits alternately by three and one starting from the rightmost payload digit, add the products, then choose the digit that makes the total a multiple of ten. This worked example is calculated by the tool:

A correct check digit does not establish ownership or prove that a number was assigned to a product. Retail UPC and EAN numbers must be licensed from GS1. This page draws the barcode; it does not issue numbers. Visit GS1 US for number assignment information.

Barcode generator FAQ

Do I need GS1 numbers?

For retail UPC and EAN identifiers, obtain the appropriate licensed numbers through GS1. Internal tracking systems may use their own identifiers with formats such as Code 128. Ask the receiving organization what it requires.

What is the difference between Code 128 and Code 39?

Code 128 can encode ASCII using multiple code sets and can pack digit pairs efficiently. Code 39 uses a smaller character set and often produces a wider symbol. The right choice depends on the scanner and the system that consumes the value.

What is ITF-14 for?

ITF-14 carries a fourteen-digit GTIN and is commonly used on shipping cases. This generator draws the interleaved two-of-five data symbol. Packaging specifications may also require bearer bars and other print dimensions; confirm them before production.

Can I use these barcodes commercially?

You can download the generated images without a tool fee. You remain responsible for the number assignment, permissions for the encoded data and the specifications of the receiving system.

Which barcode should I use for inventory?

Code 128 is a common choice for internal inventory labels, but confirm what your software and scanner support. Retail product identification has separate requirements and should use the assigned product number.

Does this tool upload my values?

No. Encoding, batch generation and image exports run locally in your browser. Barcode values are not stored in browser storage or submitted to a barcode service.
