Sentence case starts a new sentence after a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark followed by a space, and at each new line. It also turns a lone "i" into "I".

Title case in AP, APA and Chicago style

All three styles capitalize the first word, the first word after a colon, and nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and pronouns. They differ on short words.

AP

Lowercase articles (a, an, the), and conjunctions and prepositions of three letters or fewer, such as and, but, or, for, in, of, on and to. Words of four letters or more, like From and With, are capitalized. The last word is always capitalized.

APA

The same three-letter line as AP: every word of four letters or more is capitalized, and short articles, conjunctions and prepositions stay lowercase. APA sets no separate rule for the last word, so this tool leaves a short final word such as for in lowercase.

Chicago

Lowercase articles, the conjunctions and, but, for, or and nor, the word as, and prepositions of four letters or fewer, such as from, into, with and over. Since the 18th edition (2024), longer prepositions like About and Between are capitalized. The last word is always capitalized.

Rules checked on 21 October 2026 against the Chicago Manual of Style Q&A and the APA Style title case page. A converter works from word lists, so it cannot tell when a word like up, out or over is part of a verb, as in "Set Up" or "Take Over". Check those by eye.

Cases for code

How words are found

Each line is split into words at spaces, punctuation and changes from small to capital letters, so "userID list", "user-id-list" and "UserIdList" all become the same three words. Apostrophes are dropped, so "don't" becomes dont.

One name per line

Every line is converted on its own, so you can paste a column of names from a spreadsheet and get a column back. Blank lines stay blank.

Which to use

camelCase is common for JavaScript and Java variables, PascalCase for class names, snake_case for Python and database columns, kebab-case for URLs and CSS classes, and CONSTANT_CASE for constants.

Case converter FAQ

What is the difference between title case and capitalized case?

Capitalized case puts a capital on every word, including a, the and of. Title case follows a style guide and leaves short words like these in lowercase, which is what most publishers expect in a title.

Is proper case the same as title case?

No. Proper case is the name spreadsheets use for capitalizing every word: the PROPER function in Excel and Google Sheets works that way, and here it is the Capitalized Case button. Title case is stricter and keeps short words such as a, of and the in lowercase, so use it for headlines and titles, and proper case for names in a list.

Which title case style should I pick?

Use the one your school, publisher or workplace asks for. AP is common in journalism and marketing, APA in psychology and social science papers, and Chicago in books and the humanities. If nobody specifies, pick one and use it consistently.

Can I undo a conversion?

Yes. Undo goes back one step at a time, up to 50 steps, including after Clear. Pressing Ctrl+Z or ⌘Z right after a conversion does the same.

Why did a name lose its capital letters?

The tool cannot tell that a word like paris or john is a name, so sentence case writes it in lowercase. Words that already have capitals inside them, like NASA or iPhone, are kept when the option is on. Fix other names by hand after converting.

Is my text uploaded or saved?

It is never uploaded. Your last text is kept in this browser so a reload does not lose it, and Clear removes it.
